Bledlow Village Cricket Club Sunday 1st v Horndon on the Hill CC on Sun 09 Jul 2017 at 13.00
Bledlow Village Cricket Club Won By 139 Runs
Match report
Bledlow welcomed Horndon on the Hill from Essex to the Bledlow Oval in the last 16 of the National Village Cup, with both sides beginning to believe that the coveted final at Lord's was in their sights. Tom won the toss and elected to bat first as has served Bledlow well throughout the competition so far.
The innings got off to a nervy start, both Bolts and Olly playing and missing regularly as the bowlers hit good areas early on. Having survived the early pressure, Bledlow's openers managed to pick up the run rate and find the boundaries at regular intervals to the delight of the large Bledlow support. However, just as Bledlow were getting on top at 65-0 with less than 10 overs on the board, both openers fell in consecutive overs, bringing Bartlett and Will to the crease. Despite the setback Bledlow continued to score at a fast pace, with the batsmen making the most of Horndon's bizarre ploy of bowling bouncers every ball to the new pair. Will (17) and Charlie (15) both made useful contributions as Bledlow passed 200 but it was Bartlett who was threatening to take the game away from Horndon with some tremendous ball striking. He reached his hundred in typical style by smashing a long hop into the stream for yet another maximum and looked set to break all club records as he made another 41 in just 3 overs. Unfortunately he fell short of the club VKO record of 151 as he holed out to long on for a magnificent 141 from just 83 balls, with 16 fours and 8 sixes. The Bledlow faithful gave Harry a huge ovation as he made his way off but the innings was not over yet. Good hitting from Tom (34), Marcus (10) and Pearcey (17) made sure that Bledlow reached a monsterous 319-7 from their 40 overs.
After a tea befitting of the occasion Bledlow made their way out onto the field, determined to finish the job with as little drama as possible. The Pearce brothers kept Horndon well below the asking rate in the early overs and then a Matt Pearce wicket got the crowd celebrating yet again. The change bowlers of Kingy and Bolts also didn't give Horndon a sniff of victory as they kept the run rate down and also picked up regular wickets. Kingy was the first man to do the damage as he bowled two Horndon batsmen in quick succession, just as they had started to look dangerous. Two superb catches in the deep from Hawkes and Downes saw Kingy and Bolts pick up a wicket a piece to hammer home Bledlow's dominance. Another wicket each followed to give Kingy outstanding figures of 4-32 from his 8 overs and Bolts a solid 2-42. Some late order resistance made Horndon's score more respectable but the win was never in doubt and when Marcus and Tom bowled numbers 10 and 11 the celebrations began. Horndon finished on 180 all out to give Bledlow victory by a massive 139 runs.
The victory takes Bledlow to the quarter final stage, matching their best ever performance in the competition. The club will welcome Reed CC from Hertfordshire to Bledlow on 23rd June, hoping to fare better than they did in their last meeting 10 years ago.
