Shipton under Wychwood CC - 2nd XI v Bledlow Village Cricket Club Saturday 1st on Sat 25 Jun 2016 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report The Bledlow 1st XI made their way through the Oxfordshire rain to Shipton for their next Cherwell League encounter. On arrival we were greeted with the soggiest of outfields. This meant that, despite the now dry weather, everybody was forced to sit and wait in hope that the sodden turf would dry out enough to get the game on.

Eventually, after an early tea, stand in skipper Matt Pearce went out for the toss to begin what had been shortened to a 32-28 over match. Matt lost the toss and Bledlow were put in to bat on a wet wicket.

Both openers, Matt Bolton and Olly, looked comfortable in the early overs, putting away the bad balls as well as picking up lots of singles with some very positive running. However, with the score on 27 Matt was out after edging the ball through to the wicket-keeper for 10. Another two wickets fell reasonably quickly after that, with both Woodward brothers being dismissed, to leave Bledlow 45-3. An excellent, aggressive partnership between Harry and Charlie looked to be getting Bledlow up to a big score before Harry was caught behind for 41. A series of poor shots from the lower-middle order led to Bledlow losing 4 wickets for just 4 runs and they looked to be in danger of not batting their overs at 104-8. Dave then came to the crease and added some calm to proceedings as him and Charlie added a steady 22 for the 9th wicket before Charlie was out for a composed 31, especially considering the wickets that were falling around him. Dave and Dan then added a further 23 runs for the last wicket to get Bledlow up to what they hoped would be a competitive total of 149, with Dave ending on 18 and Dan unbeaten on 14 having batted very well.

The boys headed straight back out, looking to maintain their excellent standards both with the ball and in the field. The Pearce brothers opening the bowling immediately put Shipton under immense pressure, and with the help of some excellent fielding restricted the batsmen to just 20 runs from the first 10 overs. They also managed to take 3 wickets, 1 for Matt and 2 for Dave, to leave Bledlow in control of the match. James Hawkes didn't let the pressure off when he replaced Matt, bowling the Shipton opening batsman only for it to be called a no-ball. Dave continued to pick up wickets thanks to catches from Olly and Bolts, ending up with outstanding figures of 4-23 from his 9 overs. At 38-5 the hosts seemed to have given up all hopes of victory and were now just looking to hang on for the draw. Despite this Bledlow still managed to chip away at the Shipton batting line up, and when Matt Bolton picked up 2 quick wickets thanks to a sharp catch from Will and the ball of the day to bowl out the number 8, Bledlow were closing in on victory. Hawkesy then got into the act with two wickets in an over, bowling the number 9 and having the number 10 caught behind, leaving Bledlow needing just 1 wicket from 4 overs. Bolts tried, without success, to dislodge the remaining opening batsmen from his two remaining overs and an over each from Hawkesy and Matt Pearce couldn't prise out the number 11, despite some big appeals and near misses. All of this meant that Bledlow were denied a deserved win and had to settle for 17 hard earned points.

Another superb bowling and fielding display extended Bledlow's lead at the top of the table, a lead which they will hope to improve on next week when they welcome Oxford Downs to The Bledlow Oval.
