Bledlow Village Cricket Club Saturday 1st v Oxford Downs CC 2nd XI on Sat 15 May 2021 at 12.30
Bledlow Village Cricket Club Won By 96 Runs (D/L Method)

Match report We arrived at the ground for this fixture with little expectation of getting a result, the forecast for the weekend had been poor, the ground was wet and heavy clouds were about. However, after removing the covers, the pitch defied the conditions and looked like a perfect Bledlow strip. The captains and umpires went out for the toss, and with the conditions around it seemed that winning toss would be a huge predictor for the outcome of the game. Will lost the toss, Bledlow inserted.

Despite rumours of D Pearce or J Harman having a chance at the top of the order, the Woodward's walked out together to open the innings. Olly took first ball, and their opening seamer had a fair bit more pace than the batsmen were used to after the recent fixtures against Aston Clinton and Stokenchurch. Olly faced the first 12 balls and saw them off nicely. Will took guard for his first ball, the Oxford Downs opener seemed to overestimate his abilities, having thoughts of Michael Holding in his prime, and dug one in short. The new fencing was the only thing stopping him from having to fetch the ball from Logsborough, 6 runs. Second ball, he decided to return to line and length, managed to nip one away and find the edge of the bat. 1st slip spilt it, 2nd slip nabbed it on the rebound. W Woodward back to the pavilion for 6 (2). This brought Bartlett to the crease, who seemed to settle in well, finding the boudnary with some flashy drives and another hook for 6, reiterating the fact that digging the ball in short on a green top at Bledlow is not the way to go.

Bartlett and Olly fell after a period of resistance, LBW and caught at gully respectively. This brought C Downes and T Moore to the crease, the engine room of the Bledlow batting line up. These two put on a masterclass of batting in the middle order, rotating strike, running hard, punishing the bad ball. Highlight of the partnership had to be a superb straight drive from Downes, back past the bowelr for four. Charlie eventually fell after a period of tight bowling, getting caught at point. This brought Jabs to the crease - and it went exactly as you would expect. A few big blows from each batsman, and a couple of suprising twos, and a partnership of a quick 30-odd was vital for Bledlow. Dave Pearce and Tommy put on a further 64 runs with some great running and shot placement, before our innnings came to a close early due to rain.

After tea, the Downs openers came out needing 259 to win from 46 overs. Dave and Matty Pearce started bowling tight areas as always, with Bledlow desperate to get through 20 overs before the predicted rain showers later on. They took a wicket a piece, before Joey and Ben came on to speed up the over rate. A combination of tight overs and short run ups allowed Bledlow to speed through to 20 overs, with Ben also picking up two vital wickets to ensure Downs were well behind the D/L par score. This allowed Bledlow to relax and further wickets fell, along with two very tight overs from Vineeth. Eventually, the inevitable happened and the heavens opened. The game was eventually called off with Bledlow winning by 96 runs by the Duckworth Lewis method. This was a huge result, with no one else in the league completing a game, and leaving Bledlow top of the league. Next week we go away to Sandford, with the forecast not looking much better.
