Great Brickhill CC - 2nd XI v Bledlow Village Cricket Club Saturday 1st on Sat 11 Jun 2016 at 1.00pm
Bledlow Village Cricket Club Lost By 1 Run
Match report
Bledlow travelled to great Brickhill in high spirits after their excellent start to the season. The skipper Tom lost the toss but got his way as Brickhill elected to bat first on a green pitch at the picturesque Great Brickhill ground.
Things got off to a great start for Bledlow as the Pearces tied down the opening batsmen with some excellent bowling. This first led to a run out created by Matt Bolton, and then three quick wickets for Dave, leaving the home side struggling at 35-4. Brickhill's batsmen then dug in, a torturously slow 5th wicket partnership of 43 restored some hope to their innings. However, the change bowlers of Matt Bolton and James Hawkes continued to chip away with wickets at regular intervals, as well as a fourth wicket picked up by Dave at the end, to leave Bledlow needing 148 from 48 overs to secure another win.
A beautiful 'carbo-licious' tea re-energized Bledlow before Tom and Olly went out to begin the innings. The opening partnership didn't last long though, as Olly was adjudged LBW for 4. Harry came in and looked as if he was going to finish the game quickly as him and Tom put on a quick 43 for the second wicket before Bartlett smashed the ball straight to long on for 19. Bledlow struggled to keep up the momentum of the innings as 52-2 quickly became 85-5. A good stand between Downes and Mudie looked to have Bledlow on course for victory, but they were both out with the score on 123, leaving 25 runs left to win. Hawkesy was bowled soon after for just 4 as the game seemed to be slipping away from Bledlow. The Pearces then came together and managed to take the team to within 4 runs of victory before Matt was bowled whilst attempting to hit the match winning boundary. This brought Don to the crease to partner Dave. Don survived the rest of the over as the field came up in an attempt to get the final over. The next two overs produced 2 runs from Dave's bat as he tried to retain most of the strike. With just 2 runs to win, Dave hit the ball to point on the fifth ball of the over and set off for the single that would level the scores, however a direct hit resulted in Don being run out and Bledlow losing the match by a single run.
An excellent all round bowling and fielding effort again from the team was let down by a poor batting performance, with too many players getting in and then not taking responsibility to win the game.
The loss sees Bledlow slip to second in the table, they will look to bounce back next week where they welcome 4th placed Blewbury & Wallingford to the Bledlow Oval.
