Bledlow Village Cricket Club Saturday 1st v Challow & Childrey CC 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2015 at 1.00pm
Bledlow Village Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The first Cherwell League division 2 game of the season pitched us against Challow and Childrey 1st XI. This fixture last year resulted in an extraordinary tie so there were expectations for a similarly close game this year.. and it did not disappoint the large crowds that came to watch!
After losing the toss (Matt Bolton continuing his previous poor tossing record as 1st XI captain), Bledlow were put into bat on a damp wicket. It was a good toss to win so we knew we would need to bat with caution in the bowler friendly conditions. Indeed Tom Moore found himself lucky to survive his first delivery with the umpire somehow not raising his finger for LBW even though Tom has started to walk. It wasn't much longer however until Tommy was trudging back to the pavilion having been adjudged LBW by the other umpire. Charlie Downes strode out to the middle only to be plodding back the next ball after being greeted by a inswinging yorker from the young Challow left arm seamer. Bledlow were in a spot of trouble and Will Woodwards remedy was to attempt to drive every ball bowled at him. After a couple of inside edges past the keeper he started to middle some sweetly and the score started to tick over nicely. Matt Bolton had thrown down the anchor but was accumulating risk free at the other end. As the partnership was building one of Will's cover drives didn't quite work out so well as he was caught at cover. This brought the crowd favourite out to the middle, James Bacon making a return to the 1st XI line up. Nursing quite a hangover, Streaky spent much of the first 30 mins of his innings giving the opposition plenty of confidence. As the Tequila evaporated from his brow however, he and Bolton put together a partnership which laid a good foundation for some lower order hitting. Bolton got to his 50 and then got out which meant big chipping Matt Pearce got a chance to smash a few boundaries and pick the run rate up. A score of well above 200 looked now to be on until both Pearce and Streaky went in quick succession before a middle to late order collapse left Bledlow scraping to get past 190 within their 53 overs. We still thought it was a competitive score even on a now dry, flat Bledlow wicket.
The Challow openers were handcuffed by Bledlow openers Matt Pearce and James Hawkes. It was only a matter of time before Pearcey got the wicket he deserved and the pressure was firmly on the Challow batsman. Their number 3 came out in more positive fashion but excellent disciplined bowling from Bledlow kept their run rate at no more than 2 an over. After a stiff start Ben Moore found his form from last season to remove the other opener. Runs had started to come a bit easier for Challow however and their number 3 appeared to be the key to their run chase. Matt Bolton came on and made two quick breakthroughs removing both the number 3 and 4 within the same over. With Ryan Chapman then taking the 5th wicket Bledlow were firmly back in control with Challow 100-5 off 30 overs. However, the new batsmen came out with a more positive attitude and were finding the middle of their bats and the boundaries on a more regular basis. Quickly the required run rate started to come down and Bledlow were unable to get the crucial 6th wicket to break the partnership. With 10 balls to go Challow reached the target of 193 thanks to an excellent innings by their number 7.
A tough defeat to take at the start of the season given Bledlow played a lot of good cricket. The difference between the two teams came down to the runs scored in the last 10 overs of each innings.
